You have a website. You paid for it. But the phone isn't ringing and the enquiry form is gathering dust. Sound familiar? You're not alone — and the good news is, the problems are almost always the same ones.
Here are the five most common reasons small business websites fail to convert — and what you can do about each one.
Your headline doesn't say what you do
Most small business websites open with something like "Welcome to [Company Name]" or a vague tagline like "Excellence in Everything We Do." Visitors don't read — they scan. If they can't tell what you do and who you serve in 3 seconds, they leave. Your headline should answer: What do you do? Who is it for? Why should they care?
There's no clear next step
You need one primary call to action on every page. Not four. Not zero. One. "Book a consultation", "Get a quote", "Request a callback" — whatever makes sense for your business. When everything is a CTA, nothing is. Pick one and make it obvious.
It loads too slowly on mobile
Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone, the majority of your visitors are gone before they've seen anything. Large unoptimised images, bloated themes, and cheap hosting are the usual culprits. Check your speed at PageSpeed Insights.
There's no social proof
People don't trust businesses they've never heard of. Reviews, testimonials, client logos, case studies, before/after photos — these are what convert browsers into buyers. If your site has none of these, you're asking for trust you haven't earned yet. Even one or two strong testimonials make a significant difference.
You're not showing up on Google
A beautiful website that nobody can find is just an expensive business card. Basic SEO — the right keywords, proper page titles, local business schema, Google Business Profile — is often enough to start appearing for the searches that matter. Most small business websites have almost none of this set up correctly.
